A Personal Message from Kate

Have you ever been locked in a glass coffin? Completely paralyzed? Able to see and hear and feel everything but completely unable to tell anyone that you were alive?
What is success to you? New car? Money? Summer cruises? A growing, successful organization? On June 28, 1995, I had it all. On June 29, all I had wasn't important. To me, the only success that mattered was learning to blink my eyes.
One day I was active, vibrant, physically fit mother of two toddlers; living in a beautiful five-bedroom home in an exclusive California neighborhood. The most difficult matter on my mind was organizing tomorrow’s shopping luncheon with my girlfriends.
The next morning I was in intensive care, completely paralyzed in a condition known as “locked-in syndrome” brought on by a double brainstem stroke. I was trapped inside my body, bewildered and frightened, screaming silently, totally helpless.
But wait – was I really helpless? Could I really do nothing? I took a personal inventory. It didn’t take long. I had nothing. Nothing worked. I couldn’t lift an arm, move a finger, or twitch a toe. I couldn’t speak or swallow…
…then I realized I could blink. Ah! I could do one thing. Could I do anything else? Well, yes - - - I could think – and I could pray.
If I could think and pray, I could figure my way out of this. If I could blink, I could communicate and enlist the aid of my team in achieving everything I ever desired!
They said it was impossible for me to survive. They were right. IF I focused on what I had lost – what I didn’t have – what I could not do – they were right, I was a goner. The list of what I couldn’t do was endless…
…but I could do two things – I could think and I could blink; and with that realization, and faith in God’s help, a world of possibilities stretched out before me…
Honestly, I hate it when someone says, “If I can do it, you can too.” But I must say this, “If I can do it, your organization can too, and I can bloody well prove it!
